Application of innovative irrigation systems in agricultural production in Vietnam

Research of smart irrigation technology, saving water by Soil Moisture Sensor system for some agricultural crops in densely populated Central Highlands and South Central Coast of Dr. Dinh Thi Nga from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has designed a humidity sensor to measure the capacitance by measuring the capacitance from which the remote control system is built. The sample were tested for two crops in the Central Highlands and South Central Coast – Droughts area- about irrigation and preventing irrigation water.

The development of irrigation for agricultural sector in many countries is to exploit existing irrigation systems, to intensify irrigation methods and techniques to improve economic efficiency through increasing water use efficiency. One of the important measures to improve the economic efficiency of irrigation for agricultural crops is the selection and application of appropriate irrigation methods and techniques as field irrigation techniques play an important role. The distribution of water directly to agricultural crops and determine the amount of water lost on the field or more. With the current irrigation methods and techniques in Vietnam, the water loss is very large.

The basic purpose of agricultural irrigation is to bring enough water into the soil to ensure that the plant grows and develops best. With conventional irrigation techniques for formerly degraded agriculture, it is often impossible to maintain adequate moisture levels where the soil moisture change range is large, high or low relative to the preferred moisture content. This is detrimental to the growth and development of plants. In drought-prone, semi-arid climates, only irrigation can sustain agricultural development, and irrigation is more urgent than elsewhere. Water-saving irrigation is the most efficient irrigation technique that contributes significantly to agricultural productivity. So the need to develop water saving irrigation technology is very necessary, which will open up great prospects for the development of agriculture specializing in industrial crops, fruit trees, vegetables and other valuable crops. High levels of water scarcity in water scarce areas in Vietnam.

One of the disadvantages of traditional irrigation is the problem of water wastage, causing clods, soil erosion, irrigation with too much water, water soaked to create surface currents, soil soaked, which bring the water and organic matter deep down the tree roots to waste. Water-saving irrigation is irrigating well with the water requirements of agricultural crops, no excess water as well as losses during irrigation. Thanks to the simple structure and convenient operation, water saving irrigation can increase the number of irrigations and reduce the volume of irrigation water each time.

Water-saving irrigation techniques were first used in the UK at the end of 1940. In the 1950s, many water-saving irrigation systems were widely applied in. Next innovations are the drip irrigation technology development studies in the US and Israel in the 1960s which was a process of application development and the replacement of traditional agricultural techniques. Successful application of Israeli plastic water pipes has opened a new phase for water saving irrigation technology worldwide. The area of agricultural cultivation is irrigated by technology, water saving technology in the world is constantly increasing. Some countries (The United States, Israel, Australia, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Germany) are the countries in the world with many experiences and achievements in the field of research and application of water saving technology in agricultural industry.

In order to ensure the success of the research in agricultural field, it is important that the water-saving irrigation technique be carried out in an appropriate and parallel manner with the improvement of agricultural practices and the close co-operation of the farmers. The ultimate goal of the research in Vietnam is to apply it to agricultural process and be accepted by farmers.
