Enhancing the use of high-tech agricultural machinery for cashew production is considered to be one of the most effective method for its sustainable development.

Restructuring cashew’s production and processing

According to some experts, Vietnam’s cashew industry is now in need of restructuring production and processing so that the industry can have enough raw materials for the sustainable development.

In the cashew restructuring program, researchers suggested that cashew planting regions where there have been more than 20-year-old trees needed to use new varieties which could be more productive and resistant to pests.

Nguyen Xuan Cuong - Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said that restructuring cashew industry must be conducted in a comprehensive way. Particularly, the productivity must rise by 50 percent, and the production process should follow organic standards.

Nguyen Thanh Phuong - Deputy Director of the Agricultural Science Institute for Southern Coastal Central of Vi?t Nam (ASISOV), indicated that there have been many varieties of cashews tested and used in trial production, and they resulted in high productivity. In particular, these varieties had been recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) as well as used in mass production. After five years, the output reached over 1.5 tonnes/hectare with high quality.

The Vietnam Cashew Association also suggested MARD to cooperate with Cambodia for the development of cashew production, especially providing raw material for the domestic processing industry. It is also noticable that 500,000ha cashew area will be developed by a Vietnamese firm, approved by The Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery, and this is predicted to supply 1 million tonnes of raw materials to Vietnamese enterprises on a yearly basis.

Moreover, Mr. Cuong emphasized that applying scientific and technological advances, for example using high-tech agricultural machinery, for production is necessary to resolve bad weather effects. According to MARD report, the processing capacity of Vietnam’s cashew constituted at 1.8 million tonnes of raw cashew each year, in which intensively-processed products made up nearly 20 percent of total exports.
